Physical Education

Our PE Curriculum

All teachers teach at least five of all six strands of the PE curriculum. These include Games, Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Aquatics and Outdoor and Adventure. Teachers use the primary school PE curriculum PSSI lessons plans and Move Well Move Often resources to plan their lessons.

Teachers ensure that pupils are provided with at least one hour of timetabled PE during the week. We also reinforce the message that children should receive the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.

All teachers ensure that PE activities are planned/adapted so that they are accessible by all pupils.

Members of staff regularly undertake C.P.D. in P.E. and ideas and resources are shared among staff. In November 2022 Ms Maxwell and Ms Doyle attended a Move Well Move

Often training day in Enniscorthy.

Each child's progress is discussed with parents at P/T meetings and feedback included in the child's end of year report.

Games

We complete our Games Strand in the first term but games permeate our school calendar across the year. Games include GAA- football, hurling and camogie; Rounders, Soccer, Basketball, Badminton, Rugby, as well as Stretch and Grow Activities for Infants.

Athletics

We complete our Athletics Strand in the latter end of the year. Our local Ballon-Rathoe Athletics club kindly marks our walking/running lane around our Big Yard and an area of short running lanes on the grass itself.

We also have a marked Active Walkway around our school which teachers use for active lessons throughout the year.

Dance

Every year we complete our Dance Strand in the second term. As part of these lessons each class learns at least one Irish traditional dance in preparation for our annual Céilí Mór to coincide with our Seachtain na Gaeilge and St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations.

Gymnastics

We are lucky to have a range of gymnastics equipment in the school and everyone looks forward to our gymnastics lessons.

Aquatics

Children from 2nd to 4th attend swimming lessons in Graiguecullen swimming pool for a 10 week block in the first term of the school year.

Our school teaches the Land PAWS Water Safety Program every Summer Term.

Outdoor and Adventure

We complete our Outdoor and Adventure Lessons in the Summer Term when the weather is more reliable. PSSI resources are invaluable for these lessons. We also undertake walks in our local community and Altamont Gardens.

Move Well Move Often

All Teachers using the Move Well Move Often Resource prioritise 4 or more Fundamental Movement skills for further development within the PE Programme every year. We are currently following Year 2 of our 2 year PE plan.

PE Homework

All pupils receive PE homework once per week, related to the PE strand they are working on at the time.

PE Equipment

Our PE equipment and resources are clearly labelled, well organised and easily accessible in our PE Store. We carry out a PE equipment audit once a year, disposing of old and broken equipment.
